Breast Pumps

A Breast Pump is suitable for use in situations when

  • your baby is unable to breastfeed
  • you are experiencing problems with your breasts
  • you may need to go back to work

How to select and use a Breast Pump:

When selecting a Breast Pump, the suction should be appropriate to the pressure which a baby exerts when nursing from the breast, which is 80 – 100mmHg. Should you experience any pain whilst expressing, it indicates the level at which you are pumping at is too high. Ensure your pump is correctly adjusted.

The Breast Pump can be used successfully by:

  • Warming the breasts with a hot wet towel.
  • Gently massage the breast to open the mammary glands and to stimulate the areola.
  • Express at the pressure appropriate for you.
  • Do not express for longer then 20 minutes, as only an infant can empty a mother's breast.
  • Expressing is not meant to be painful.
  • Stop expressing immediately should you feel pain in the breast or nipple.
